Health Horizons

In Health Horizons Nutrition Department, we practice Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine helps clinicians identify and ameliorate dysfunctions in the physiology and biochemistry of the human body as a primary method of improving patient health. Functional Medicine acknowledges that chronic disease is almost always preceded by a lengthy period of declining function in one or more of the body's systems.  Those dysfunctions are, for each of us, the result of lifelong interactions among our environment, our lifestyle, and our genetic predispositions. Each patient, therefore, represents a unique, complex and interwoven set of influences that have set the stage for the development of disease or the maintenance of health.

Functional Medicine could be characterized, therefore as 'upstream medicine' or 'back to basics' --back to the patient's life story, back to the processes, wherein disease originates and definitely back to the desire of healthcare practitioners to support people in getting well, not just manage symptoms. (Excerpt from the Textbook of Functional Medicine, 2010)

At Health Horizons, we believe that the body's innate intelligence does the healing and our role is to facilitate the healing process. Facilitating the healing process means that we identify the underlying causes of ill health and work to resolve them through strictly natural, non-invasive approaches.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What type of evaluation do you perform?

The primary method of evaluation is called Nutrition Response Testing or Applied Kinesiology (muscle testing), a system of gathering information about your current state of health. This analysis is done by testing neurological reflex points and specific energy points on your body. Each Nutrition Response Testing reflex point corresponds to a specific organ, system or function. Nutrition Response Testing is a study of how the different reflex points of the body relate to the state of health and flow of energy in each organ and system of the body.

Additionally, we utilize Heart Rate Variability testing to assess the autonomic nerve system, Bio-Impedance Analysis to measure cellular health, visual examination of the tongue, skin and face, and urinalysis to assess your body's function. Blood work and functional lab tests are utilized as needed.

The following is a list of stressors, antecedents or triggers that are assessed and may have a negative effect on your health:  food sensitivities, airborne allergies, microbial overgrowth (virus, bacteria, parasite, fungus), metal or chemical toxicity, mycotoxins, electromagnetic radiation, emotional triggers, and physical stressors such as prior injury, repetitive motion and posture.

What is your goal in treatment?
